We're proud to share that Mount Airy Downtown has once again been recognized as a Main Street America™ Accredited program for 2026.
This designation is more than an award — it's a reflection of the people, partnerships, and commitment that continue to shape our downtown.
What Does Accreditation Mean?
Main Street America accreditation is awarded annually to programs that demonstrate excellence in downtown revitalization. Accredited programs meet rigorous national standards in areas such as:
Strategic planning and organizational leadership
Historic preservation and revitalization
Community engagement and partnerships
Financial sustainability
Professional staffing and training
Measuring and reporting meaningful community impact
Simply put, accreditation recognizes communities that are committed to doing the work — and doing it well.

Mount Airy Downtown, Inc.
Mount Airy Downtown, Inc. (MAD) is the nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, promoting, and strengthening Downtown Mount Airy.
Working alongside businesses, property owners, the City of Mount Airy, volunteers, and community partners, we lead initiatives that support small businesses, encourage investment, preserve historic character, improve public spaces, and create experiences that bring people together.
Our work is guided by the nationally recognized Main Street Approach™, which focuses on four key areas:
Economic Vitality – Supporting businesses, entrepreneurs, and investment
Design – Preserving and enhancing the appearance and functionality of downtown
Promotion – Marketing downtown as a destination and creating experiences that bring people together
Organization – Building partnerships, engaging volunteers, and ensuring long-term sustainability

North Carolina Main Street
Mount Airy is a North Carolina Main Street designated community, recognized by the N.C. Department of Commerce Main Street & Rural Planning Center. Mount Airy Downtown, Inc. administers the program locally by building public-private partnerships that spur economic development, strengthen local businesses, preserve historic assets, and create measurable community impact.
The NC Main Street & Rural Planning Center is a Main Street America™ Coordinating Program and one of the nation's original statewide Main Street programs. Since 1980, it has helped communities across North Carolina revitalize their downtowns using the Main Street Approach™, a preservation-based economic development framework centered on Economic Vitality, Design, Promotion, and Organization.
Main Street America™
Main Street America™ is a program of the nonprofit National Main Street Center, a subsidiary of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Since 1980, Main Street America has helped communities revitalize historic downtowns and commercial districts through preservation-based economic development. Today, its network includes more than 1,000 community-based organizations and coordinating programs working together to create vibrant, people-centered places to live, work, and visit.
Being recognized as a Main Street America™ Accredited program is a mark of distinction that reflects a commitment to comprehensive revitalization, community engagement, continuous improvement, and measurable results. It signifies that Mount Airy Downtown is part of a national movement with a proven track record of strengthening local economies, preserving community character, and building places people are proud to call home.
