What's a social district?

A social district is an area where you can walk with an open container of an alcoholic beverage. It includes both the outdoor common area and the indoor spaces of participating businesses — during the days and hours the district is open.

​

Buy your drink from a permitted business in a designated Market Street cup, then carry it as you mingle, browse the murals, and hop from spot to spot.

Designated cups

Only official Market Street cups may be carried in the district. Look for the district mark on the cup — this is how you know a drink can travel from one business to the next.

Enjoy your beverage only within the mapped MSA&ED boundaries. When you reach the edge of the district, finish up or step inside a participating business.

Main Street America is a program of the nonprofit National Main Street Center, a subsidiary of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Department of Commerce Main Street & Rural Planning Center.  Mount Airy Downtown, Inc. is charged with administering the program at the local level and building public-private partnerships to spur economic development that achieves measurable results such as investment, business growth, and job creation.
