Historic Downtown Mount Airy resides at the doorstep of the Blue Ridge Mountains where our urban living is enhanced by arts, entertainment, local wine, and our Traditional Music roots. Fostering a diverse variety of small businesses flavored with authentic dining experiences, Mount Airy is a true Southern Town with all the
charm of Mayberry.
Mount Airy was settled in the 1750's as a stagecoach stop on the road between Winston-Salem, North Carolina and Galax, Virginia. It was named for a nearby plantation. Mount Airy was
incorporated in 1885. The City's official seal was established in 1977 which depicts major industries that are home to Mount Airy including: furniture, textiles, and the granite quarry - because Mount Airy is home to the world's largest open-faced granite quarry. Mount Airy is widely known as the inspiration for Mayberry on The Andy Griffith Show because we are Andy Griffith's hometown. Population in Mount Airy is 10,388. We are a quaint small town filled with the friendliest people. We hope you'll come and stay a while!
